RED ALERT: THE 2009 REDWINGS MEMORIAL
CONTESTS ARE ON FOR THIS WEEKEND JUNE 27-28!
Please read our surf forecast
summary given below prepared by Kanekoa Crabbe:
As of today (Tuesday, 6/23), the Kilo Nalu Buoy off the south shore of Oahu
has 17 second forerunners indicating the beginning of the arrival of 4
consecutive swells arriving tomorrow (swell #1), wed 6/24 (2-3 ft). This
first swell will intensify to mid-high levels on Friday 6/26 (2-4+ ft, swell
#2) then to even higher levels on Saturday 6/27 (3-5+ ft, swell #3). The
intensity experienced on Saturday will gradually subside sometime on Sunday,
6/28, to 3-4, occ. 5 ft and will be reinforced at the beginning of next week
at similar levels (swell #4). Above average (15-25 mph) ENE tradewinds are
forecasted throughout the entire period creating side-to-off shore surf
conditions. Tidal differences expected to be present on both Saturday and
Sunday are not as extreme as what we have experienced yesterday & today (3 ft+
difference to a under 2 ft difference forecasted for this weekend).
A HIGH SURF ADVISORY for the South Facing shores of all Hawaiian islands
will probably be posted on or before this Friday morning (6/26).
An Announcement and Entry forms are attached. Please mail, fax or
email your entry ASAP are divisions will be limited to 30 contestants each.

Bummer for those who made the time, but I just found
out the Point Panic Redwings contest is postponed until either the
last weekend in June or July.
Here's word from contest director Mike Kliks PHD:
"Because of the Kam Day parade that closes off access
to Point Panic for most of the AM on Saturday we will not run the
contest this weekend. Our next permitted weekend is June 27-28 and
then July 26-27. . .so stay tuned to our Web site at"

SURF ZONE FORECAST
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE HONOLULU HI
700 PM HST MON JUN 8 2009
OAHU-
700 PM HST MON JUN 8 2009
HIGH SURF ADVISORY FOR SOUTH FACING SHORES
Surf along north facing shores will be 1 to 3 feet through Tuesday.
Surf along east facing shores will be 2 to 4 feet through Tuesday.
Surf along south facing shores will be 5 to 8 feet through Tuesday.
Surf along west facing shores will be 2 to 4 feet through Tuesday.
Outlook through Sunday Jun 14: a larger south swell is expected late
Tuesday, bringing surf above the 8-foot advisory threshold through Thursday,
and then slowly decline through the weekend
Summary: above average southerly swell.
Detailed: mid Monday on southern shores has high surf from 185-200 degrees
at 14-18 seconds. It was generated by severe gales SE of New Zealand a week
ago. This episode is expected to peak on Monday and slowly drop into Tuesday
from 180-200 degrees.
A series of extratropical cyclones SE to E of New Zealand over the past week
have created back-to-back episodes that should keep most days above average
into next week.
An exceptionally broad system tracked SE of New Zealand last Tuesday. Seas
were primarily aimed at targets just east of Hawaii. However, the wider than
normal fetch would allow swell height to dissipate slower, and angular
spreading should bring ample surf to Hawaii. The spreading will give the
local incident direction centered on 185 degrees. Long period forerunners of
18-22 seconds are expected late Tuesday. The episode should peak on
Wednesday in the high surf bracket, then slowly decline to moderate levels
by late Thursday, and small to moderate for Friday, still from 170-190
degrees.
Another low pressure had an accompanying cold front push equatorward just
east of New Zealand last Friday into Saturday. Gales to severe gales in the
185-200 degree band should make for a moderate to near high episode,
building Friday night into Saturday.

ALOHA
NA HOA: THE REDWINGS EVENTS COMMITTEE HAS DETERMINED THAT CONDITIONS ARE
NOT SUITABLE FOR OUR CONTESTS THIS WEEKEND AND WE HAVE
CANCELLED THE YELLOW ALERT
FOR HOLDING OUR CONTESTS AT POINT PANIC THIS
COMING WEEKEND MAY 23-24.
CURRENT FORECASTS (SEE BELOW) SUGGEST THAT NEXT WEEKEND THE CONDITIONS WILL BE
VERY GOOD! STAY TUNED TO THE UPDATED FORECAST THAT WILL BE PREPARED BY
KANEKOA CRABBE BASED ON THE NOAA/NWS REPORTS.
ANNOUNCEMENT AND ENTRY FORMS FOR BOTH THE HANDBOARDING AND PAEPO CONTESTS ARE
ATTACHED.
MMK FOR
THE REDWINGS EVENTS COMMITTEE.
South Shore forecast by Kanekoa Crabbe is
based on Pat Caldwell's National Weather Service Report for Honolulu, O`ahu
posted at 3:00 PM Tues, May 19th:
http://www.prh.noaa.gov/hnl/pages/SRF.php
In the long range forecast (next
weekend may 30-31) there is another SSW swell forecasted arriving Friday the
29th and its predicted to be a MINIMUM of 2-3ft (4-6ft faces, possibly
bigger!!!). With the weather pattern as it is now (meaning this week &
weekend) with the extreme tides and funky winds, there will be trades that
weekend (5/30-31) and with less tidal extremities. A better chance of BETTER
waves. As the days go by, we should be able to see how this new Zealand
storms forms up and hopefully, next Tuesday will give us a good perspective of
what this NEW SSW swell will do.

South Shore forecast
based on Pat Caldwells National Weather Service Report for Honolulu, O`ahu
posted at 3:00 PM Tues, May 19th:
http://www.prh.noaa.gov/hnl/pages/SRF.php
There will be 2 separate south swells coming this weekend. The first swell
starts out of the SSE direction at about 2-3ft (4-6 ft faces). The second
swell is from the SW direction and is also forecasted to arrive sometime on
saturday at 2-3 ft (4-6ft faces) . Both swell are forecasted to keep its
intensity through sunday before diminishing sometime early next week. One
factor that is not favorable is the extreme high tides (sat. 2.4 ft at 3:48PM
and sun. 2.5 ft at 4:33PM). Extreme tides and average swell such as these 2
do make for extremely inconsistent sets. Another variable is the wind. I
have not looked at any weather charts to see when the trades will return but
we have been and are currently being affected by a low pressure system and the
trades are forecasted to arrive sunday. I predict that because we will have
variable winds for the next 3 days (wed-fri), we should start to see the
trades back on SATURDAY not SUNDAY. Thus the swell should be good, the wind
should be good, but the tide is the only setback that CANNOT be changed since
it will mean inconsistent sets in the afternoon starting at about 2PM on sat
and 3PM on sunday.
